Performance Problem Solving manuals are designed as part of an intact video-based training program to be delivered by a Certified Performance Problem Solving trainer.  

Each session of Performance Problem Solving builds on the skills mastered in the previous sessions as participants systematically develop a problem-solving process model that can be applied to situations ranging from routine to unexpected. 

Session 1. Communicating the Problem Situation  Preview Participant Manual

In the first session, participants learn to:

¨   Bring up problems without creating defensiveness or hostility

¨   Discuss performance in a way that is direct, specific, and non-punishing

¨   Reinforce and recognize effective performance

¨   Make positive reinforcement specific, relating positive actions to their impact on the job

Session 2.    Solving Motivation Problems

Participants learn to:

¨    Recognize problems that are due to a lack of motivation

¨   Coach or motivate people to improve performance

¨   Stimulate internal motivations in order to sustain performance

 

Session 3.  Solving Ability Problems  

Participants learn to:

¨     Distinguish between problems that are caused by a lack of motivation and those caused by a lack of ability

¨   Involve employees in solving problems that are reducing productivity or performance

¨   Resolve long-term problems

 

Session 4.  Dealing with Emergent Problems

Participants learn to:

¨    Identify problems that emerge during problem-solving discussions (high emotion, complexity, insubordination, lying, etc.)

¨    Handle emergent prob­lems

¨    Recognize and reduce anger or defensiveness

¨    Listen and understand what others are trying to communicate 

 

Session 5.    Refining and Extending Problem-Solving Skills

Participants learn to:

¨  Review, refine, and hone skills learned in the previous four sessions.

¨ Extend the use of the skills to other workplace activities

¨  Apply the skills in preventing problems as well as solving them

¨  Maintain the use of the skills in the future
