Performance Problem Solving Rehearsal Cards

Interact's programs are designed to ensure participants not only understand the skills but actually know how to use them. Practice is how people develop the behavior side of these skills. About a third of each session is spent practicing the skills to enable participants to feel confident in their ability to apply them with others.

What’s a Rehearsal?

A rehearsal differs from a traditional role play in that it provides participants with specific problems that have been designed to allow individuals to practice the skills they have just learned. The purpose is to encourage practice without having to spend time thinking up problems. In addition, a rehearsal keeps individuals focused on the skills rather than on whatever might come up in a random role play.

How does a Rehearsal Work?

Participants are asked to play one of three roles.

¿ Initiator - the person who must solve the problem.

¿ Respondent - the person the Initiator must approach.

¿ Coach - an individual who watches, helps out, takes notes, and gives feedback

After reading one of the Inter-Actssm or rehearsal cards, the Initiator must deal with the problem described by using the skills taught in the session. The Respondent’s card provides detailed instructions on how to respond - thus restricting the response to problems the Initiator has been taught to handle.

If the Initiator deals with the problem by employing the skills taught in the session, the Respondent is usually instructed to comply fairly easily. If, on the other hand, the Initiator fails to employ the target skills, the Respondent takes longer to comply.

Can Participants Handle the ?

Performance Problem Solving is designed to provide individuals with successful practice situations. By the time participants practice what has been covered in the training, they typically know enough to handle the challenge presented them. In those cases where help is needed, one of their co-participants can assist. Each practice situation assigns one person to play the part of Coach. Coach’s are given a card that provides an outline of how the situation might be handled, what to watch for, and what to discuss. Should an individual have difficulty with a situation, a Coach helps out and the rehearsal is then continued until the Initiator is successful.
